At Tashi Brow and Skin Studio, one of the most common permanent eyebrow questions we receive is: what is the difference between ombre brows and hairstroke brows, and which one should I choose? As the answer depends on a variety of factors, we decided to upload a post specifically to help you make this important decision!
Ombre Brows vs. Hairstroke Brows: What’s the Difference?
You might have heard of ombre brows referred to as either ombre powder brows or simply powder brows. Ombre brows have a beautiful, subtle gradient effect, and they also utilize a pointillism or pixelization technique. During your session at Tashi Brow and Skin Studio, we use specialized needles to insert thousands of tiny dots of ink into your skin. The end result are boldly beautiful brows that resemble your best makeup looks with an elegant powder-finish.
You might have heard of the hairstroke technique called nanoblading or HD strokes. As the name suggests, the hairstroke technique mimics the natural look of our hair follicles. This look is more subtle than ombre powder brows but equally beautiful, and perfect for those who want everyone to think they woke up with naturally amazing eyebrows.
Which One Should I Choose?
This depends on many factors, such as your skin texture, your desired look, and how much maintenance you’re willing to put in. So, let’s break it down by each factor.
Skin Type
If you have oilier skin, we recommend you choose ombre brows, as you’ll retain more color. Dry and normal skin types can choose between hairstroke brows and ombre powder brows.
Those with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick Type IV+) may also want to choose ombre brows over hairstrokes, as the ink might blend in too much with your skin tone with the hairstroke method. However, if you are very interested in the hairstroke technique, send us an email, or bring it up during your consultation, and Seung can help you decide which option will work best for you!

I’m Still Conflicted…
If you’re still unsure which technique is the right fit for you, then the combo technique might be the best of both worlds for you! After discussing your brow goals, we can borrow from elements of each (such as using hairstrokes in some places and filling in areas with the ombre technique). At Tashi Brow and Skin Studio, our ultimate goal is making our clients confident and happy – so let us know what your dream eyebrows look like, and we’ll do everything we can to bring those dreams into your reality.
