What Is Areola Tattooing? 

Areola Tattooing is an understated yet essential service in the world of permanent makeup. Its function is clear from the name – areola tattooing uses traditional permanent makeup and tattoo techniques to create the illusion of a new areola and nipple on breasts. Seung, the owner of Tashi Brow & Skin Studio, first became interested in the technique years ago, when she realized that many cancer survivors who undergo mastectomies (surgical removal of breast tissue) are left with no/drastically altered areola and nipples. What is most important, obviously, is that these women beat breast cancer – however, their altered breasts can also be a painful daily reminder of the obstacles they had to overcome. Thus, the journey to reclaiming their sense of self often involves more than just physical recovery. It's about rebuilding confidence, reclaiming autonomy, and embracing every aspect of their identity with pride. In this journey, areola tattooing emerges as a transformative art, offering not just the restoration of a physical feature, but the rekindling of self-assurance and empowerment. 

When Seung first opened her permanent makeup business, she focused only on cosmetic tattooing of the brows, eyelids, and lips. However, after discovering the positive potential of areola tattooing, she became determined to master the technique, in order to restore the highest amount of confidence to the largest frequency of clients possible. 

What does the Process Entail?

An areola tattooing session is a meticulously orchestrated process that begins with a thorough consultation between Seung and her client. During this initial meeting, the client's preferences, skin tone, and desired outcome are discussed in detail to ensure a personalized approach. Seung also evaluates the symmetry of the breasts in relation to each other, and discusses the best outcome going forward with her clients.  

On the day of the session, the area is cleansed and numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort. Using specialized equipment and pigments, Seung meticulously recreates the natural contours and color variations of the areola and nipple. Each stroke of the tattoo needle is carefully executed to achieve realistic texture and shading. 

Following the procedure, the client is provided with aftercare instructions to promote proper healing and long-lasting results. Similarly to our other permanent makeup services, the client waits 8-weeks to allow their skin time to heal before returning to our studio, where, if desired, they can bring up any concerns with the healed color.
